The Poet

Behind the Ink

Chirag Natesh Vijay

I write because some emotions refuse to survive ordinary language. They need rhythm, silence, metaphor, and a little recklessness. They need to be held at an angle the sentence cannot manage alone.

The Archive

This is not a portfolio. It is an archive — which is a different thing. A portfolio curates the best. An archive keeps what mattered. The poems here are not my most polished; they are my most honest. Some were written in anger. Several in grief. A few in the particular clarity that only arrives at midnight.

The archive exists because I believe language is still the most precise instrument we have for locating a feeling — not explaining it, not resolving it, but finding its exact coordinates and holding them still long enough to look.

What the Poems Are About

Identity. Equality. The question of what we owe each other and keep failing to pay. Rain — which I have always believed is the most democratic thing in the world, arriving without permission on the unjust and the just alike. Memory, and the specific cruelty of loving something that has already happened.

There is also nature — not as backdrop but as argument. The mountains that keep their own count. The wire that neither accuses nor forgives. The steel tumbler that outlasts everything it held.

And there is defiance. A recurring figure in this archive is the person who was told they were too much and discovered that too much was exactly the right amount. I find that figure worth returning to. I think you might too.

How These Were Written

Most of these poems were written at the edge of something — the edge of sleep, a conversation, a year, a patience. They did not arrive complete. They arrived as a line, usually at an inconvenient hour, and the rest was an attempt to be worthy of that first line.

I revise slowly and delete without guilt. Every poem in this archive replaced at least three poems that deserved to disappear. The ones that remain are the ones that survived my own skepticism — which, for poetry, is the only meaningful quality bar.

If a poem here moved you — wrote something down that you had been carrying unnamed — I would be glad to know. The contact page is a single link. It opens a letter. That feels right.
